- 80lv reports that Doom: The Dark Ages sold less than a million copies.
- Bethesda shared that they surpassed 3 million players on the game.
- 2.2 million were said to be from Xbox Game Pass.
Doom: The Dark Ages sold less than a million copies despite having achieved a 3 million player milestone – 80lv reports that 2.2 million of the players were from Xbox Game Pass, which handed the game out for free to subscribers.
Rickard Linder at Alinea Analytics estimates around 800,000 gamers purchased Doom: The Dark Ages, which the publishers claim is their biggest launch in id Software’s history, having achieved 3 million players seven times faster than Doom Eternal.
“Thank you 3 million players,” the official marketing infographic for Doom: The Dark Ages reads.
The infographic fails to inform about where the players came from. According to Alinea Analytics, an estimated 200,000 players were from PlayStation, 400,000 from Steam, and 2.4 million from Xbox – only 200,000 players supposedly purchased the Xbox version. As previously mentioned, 2.2 million players received the game for free from Xbox Game Pass during the game’s initial release.
Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel to Doom (2016) that follows the rise of the series’ protagonist, the Doom Slayer, as he becomes the last hope of a kingdom fighting against the forces of Hell in a techno-medieval setting.
