Notably, Kai Rosenkranz, the composer of the original, is also responsible for the soundtrack of the remake. On top of that, the title will feature not only adapted dialogues from the original game but also new content written specially for the remake. As in the original, the choice of a dialogue option will determine the course and outcome of a conversation. The game will be voiced in German and English, Polish, and Russian. Also, developers planned text-based localizations for Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

The original Gothic game by Piranha Bytes was released in 2001 and became the first title in the series, which includes two more numbered installments with one expansion each, and a spin-off, Arcania.

As of 2010, the Gothic series had sold approximately 3 million copies across its main titles: Gothic, Gothic II, and Gothic 3, along with their expansions and re-releases.
