Key points
  1. Dark and Darker mobile developer announced that it’s renaming the game to Abyss of Dungeons.
  2. Abyss of Dungeons is a dungeon-crawling RPG game with extraction shooter mechanics.
  3. The game is currently available in the US and Canada as part of its soft launch.

The mobile version of Dark and Darker has been renamed to Abyss of Dungeons. Dark and Darker is a hybrid dungeon crawler and RPG set in a dark fantasy world. The game features mechanics from extraction shooters, where players enter dungeons and do their best to get out of them alive, with more loot if lucky.

“This change reflects our vision to take dungeon crawling even deeper — with darker atmospheres, richer lore, and more intense battles. The game remains the same at its core. Your journey continues. Just under a new name,” read the X post that accompanied the name change.

As of writing, Abyss of Dungeons only has six classes compared to its PC counterpart, which has 10. The available classes in Abyss of Dungeons are Wizard, Barbarian, Cleric, Fighter, Ranger and Rogue.

In 2023, Nexon filed a cease and desist notice in order to pause the development of Dark and Darker. The studio felt that the game had too many similarities to a game that was internally being developed called P3.

Ironmace, the developers of Dark and Darker, comprises people who quit Nexon and also worked on P3. Ju-Hyun Choi, in particular, was P3’s project team leader before he left to develop Dark and Darker with Ironmace. The notice led to the game being delisted on Steam.

Dark and Darker was back on Steam in June 2024 after the developers asked the storefront to reinstate the game, saying that the copyright infringement claims of Nexon were “meritless.”

Earlier this year, a Seoul court ruled that Ironmace did not infringe on Nexon’s copyright, but the court still ordered Ironmace to pay Nexon 8.5 billion Korean won—roughly $6 million—due to the developers infringing on Nexon’s trade secrets by leaking company data.

Abyss of Dungeon is available on Android and iOS in the US and Canada as part of its soft launch. The developers put out a press release that mentioned they’re planning to expand the soft launch coverage to Indonesia, Brazil, Thailand and Mexico. Additionally, the game was supposed to launch in early 2025 but has been confirmed to be “slightly delayed.”
