Microsoft is hiring an engineer to help support backwards compatibility with the Xbox consoles – their job posting for the position is on their official website, which lays out in detail the position’s role.

“As a Principal Software Engineer in Xbox, you will coordinate across teams to define and implement the Xbox backward compatibility game security system to protect game assets while improving the experience for our customers,” the posting reads.

“You will be a key contributor to the technology solutions developed to emulate legacy games on modern platforms. […] You will design and build solutions that enable system level emulation across the catalog of Xbox content.”

The posting was uploaded on May 7, prompting Redditors to discuss the probable implications surrounding the hiring.

“I guess this is them working on a software solution to be able to carry their players’ digital libraries on future Windows-based consoles and handhelds,” another user shares.

This speculation is based on the fact that Xbox teased the release of their Xbox handheld – a collaboration with Rog Ally.  The initial announcement for Xbox’s gaming handheld was revealed with the codename ‘Keenan,’ which will supposedly be a handheld PC that can run Windows.
