Mafia: The Old Country Release Date Revealed

2K and Hangar 13 have announced that Mafia: The Old Country will launch on August 8. The game is also promised to return to its roots—both narratively and geographically. Set in early 1900s Sicily, the game is being billed as a focused, linear experience, a notable departure from the open-world structure of Mafia 3.

A new trailer released today offers the first look at protagonist Enzo Favara, a young recruit working his way up the ranks of Don Torrisi’s crime family. The footage showcases Sicily’s rural landscapes, vintage cars, and period-authentic weaponry, suggesting a slower, more grounded tone compared to the last entry’s modern setting.

“This is a mafia origin story that’s gritty, grounded, brutal, and emotional,” said Hangar 13 studio head Nick Baynes. He emphasized the game’s focus on narrative and era immersion rather than sprawling gameplay systems. 2K president David Ismailer added that The Old Country is designed to deliver a compelling story “without requiring massive time commitments,” hinting at a shorter, more cinematic experience.

Mafia: The Old Country will be the second original entry developed by Hangar 13 following Mafia 3, which received praise for its narrative ambitions (with an incredible JFK assassination plot twist) but criticism for repetitive gameplay. The studio also led the well-received Mafia: Definitive Edition remake in 2020.
