Key points
  1. Battlefield Labs playtest helped polish movement speed mechanics.
  2. The playtest also helped the developers establish a foundation for their low-latency and high-performance gunplay.
  3. Not every idea tested in Battlefield Labs will make it to the full game.

EA shared a development update for Battlefield Labs via a blog post, where the devs discussed the initial learnings discovered through playtesting and then moved onto communicating the design philosophy for future planned updates.

Thus far, the Battlefield Labs playtests have helped accomplish the following, according to EA

  • Establishing a solid foundation for smooth, low-latency and high-performance gunplay.
  • Finding the right balance in movement speed for functionality such as crouch sprint, combat rolling and vaulting as part of […] combat pacing initiatives.
  • Using destruction to create fun and lasting tactical gameplay across rounds and experiences.

“We’re now ready to continue scaling Battlefield Labs testing globally. Throughout May, we’ll be inviting more players across Europe and North America, and will start to include select areas of Asia,” EA stated.

The next goal is direct gameplay adjustments, since EA has built a solid network foundation. Battlefield Labs will be concentrating its gameplay development efforts on refining object destruction, balancing weapon archetypes and damage values, and fine-tuning combat pacing mechanics.

Some of the ideas and gameplay updates may never reach release, but testing the features helps EA understand and refine elements that resonate best with the players. Player satisfaction is one of Battlefield Labs’ playtest’s primary objectives since EA is attempting to hit a perfect combination of form, function and feel with its next Battlefield title.

“We need to earn the trust of our core players back, but we also want to expand the universe and offer new experiences within Battlefield,” Vince Zampella, head of Respawn and group GM for EA Studios, said in a recent interview. “We’re all in on Battlefield, and we plan to offer more for players than ever before.”

For those interested in participating in the playtest, here are Battlefield Labs’ PC requirements:

PC minimum specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 2060 / AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT 6GB
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Storage: Minimum 30GB

PC recommended specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700 / AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060Ti / AMD Radeon RX 6700-XT
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Storage: Minimum 30GB

Since the end of 2024, the Battlefield franchise has sold approximately 90 million units worldwide. Battlefield 2042, the most recent installment in the franchise, was met with mixed to negative reception upon release. It was criticized for the lack of content at launch, numerous bugs and an unstable experience.
