According to Newzoo, PC gamers spent more than $24 billion on microtransactions in 2024 alone. Newzoo is an analytics company focused on the video games industry.

A summary from the analytics was provided by App2Top, another information resource regarding the video game landscape. According to them, PC gaming revenue totaled $37.3 billion in 2024, which is only a 0.1 increase from last year.

The biggest portion of the revenue goes to microtransactions, which made up 58% of the graph. It saw a growth of 1.4% compared to last year. Paid games contributed about 28% or about $10.7 billion, but it was the only category that saw a loss. The graph mentioned that they suffered a 2.6% loss from last year. Lastly, DLCs were the final piece of the puzzle that provided 14%, which is around $5.3 billion. It saw an increase of 0.8% year-over-year.

Console games are also a part of the graph, earning around $42.8 billion in 2024, still higher than PC. Paid games have dominated the console graph, with $19.9 billion or 46% coming from their sales. However, the graph noted that this is actually a 14% decrease compared to 2023. To balance this out, subscriptions have gained a 14.1% increase. Microtransactions are the second biggest contributor, with about $13.9 or 32% of the graph belonging to them.

Analysts are expecting the total revenue of both console and PC gaming to grow over the next three years, eventually reaching $92.7 billion in 2027. They cite GTA 6 and Nintendo Switch 2 as the biggest growth drivers of 2025.
