Key points

  1. Elder Scrolls Online is adding subclasses in June as part of its Update 46.
  2. Players will be able to access the system at no additional cost.
  3. Elder Scrolls Online was initially released in 2014 on the PC and macOS.

Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is adding subclasses in June, according to their very first ESO direct. Players will be able to access this system free of charge, however, they have to be at least level 50.

Aside from a level requirement, there are also other things to consider when subclassing. Classes in ESO have a maximum of three skill lines to choose from. Once subclassing becomes available, players will be able to select trees from other classes, but they should have one of their selected trees coming from their original class.

This unlocks a whole new potential in roleplay and gameplay as players can now quite literally be whatever they want within the confines of the game. Another downside to subclassing is that acquiring skills from trees outside of your original class will cost double, making it a lot more expensive.

With these possibilities, it’s only normal to wonder how the developers are going to balance the game. PC Gamer reported that Game Director Rich Lambert was relaxed about it during the post-preview Q&A and said that they’re fine with its current state.

Elder Scrolls Online is an MMORPG first released on the PC and macOS in 2014. A PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version followed the next year. Finally, the game was released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021. ESO’s Update 46 will drop in June, which contains other quality-of-life changes aside from the aforementioned subclassing.
