Bungie Confirms PlayStation Account Not Needed For Marathon on PC and Xbox

|
- Bungie has confirmed that players wouldn’t need PlayStation Accounts to be able to play the game on PC and Xbox.
- This concern comes from a past controversy when PlayStation would require them for games released on other platforms.
- Marathon is set to hold a gameplay showcase on April 12.
Marathon developers Bungie confirmed that PC and Xbox players wouldn’t need a PlayStation account to be able to play the game. The information was confirmed through a message on a Discord server.
A PlayStation account being required for Marathon would mean that the game will lose a lot of potential players. Not all countries are supported by PlayStation, and that would mean Marathon will not be released in those countries, essentially region-locking the game.
Something similar happened in 2024 with Helldivers 2. The game released without a hitch, but soon found itself in the middle of controversy due to PlayStation asking players to log in with their PlayStation account. Players were mad as this wasn’t a part of the requirements before. Not only that, but players from countries unsupported by PlayStation suddenly found themselves unable to play the game because of this.
Sony would eventually retract this requirement, but the damage had been done, and players have been skeptical about games coming from studios affiliated with PlayStation.
With that being said, it’s important to note that while Bungie was acquired by Sony, they are not a part of the PlayStation studios. Bungie remains an independent studio.
Bungie will hold a gameplay showcase of Marathon, the extraction shooter that it’s currently developing. It’s set to happen on April 12, and rumors are floating that a closed alpha is set to happen soon after.
