Ubisoft Legally Responds to The Crew Lawsuit, Claiming Advertised Product was Received

- Ubisoft filed to dismiss The Crew lawsuit.
- They claim “Plaintiffs received access to The Crew entirely consistent with what was marketed to them.”
- The Crew was a racing game that completely shut down its servers after a decade of live-service updates, barring all access to the title.
Ubisoft legally responded to The Crew lawsuit, filing for dismissal. The initial lawsuit was filed in 2024 as a response to the shutdown of the racing game. Having been released on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, The Crew is no longer officially available on all platforms – even offline features have been disabled.
According to Ubisoft, despite the complete shutdown and barring access to all features in The Crew, the “plaintiffs received access to The Crew entirely consistent with what was marketed to them.”
“The reality is that consumers received the benefit of their bargain and were explicitly notified, at the time of purchase, that they were purchasing a license,” Ubisoft said in their legal document.
After initially announcing the shutdown in December 2023, Ubisoft disabled The Crew’s servers in March 2024. The people suing Ubisoft wished to continue playing the game, but were completely locked out despite owning physical game disks for the title. These same people responded to Ubisoft’s claims on March 18 with an amended complaint.
In their legal response, they source The Crew’s packaging, which states that the activation code doesn’t expire until 2099. The plaintiffs argue this was Ubisoft’s way of implying that the game would remain playable “during this time and long thereafter.”
The legal battle is still ongoing. Ubisoft has until April 29 to respond once again.
The Crew released in 2014, featuring an open world online racing game. Developed by Ivory Tower in collaboration with Ubisoft, The Crew amassed over 12 million players during its life cycle.
