A User BIOS Modded AMD’s RX 9070, Substantially Increasing the GPU’s Performance

|
- A user BIOS-modded AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics card with firmware from higher-end 9070 XT model.
- The mod significantly increased clock speeds and yielded higher total graphics power, surpassing even the higher-end RX 9070 XT.
- Flashing a BIOS on GPUs comes with risks, thereby warranting extra caution.
A user at PCGames Hardware BIOD modded AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GPU. The mod was done to a non-XT GPU, resulting in better performance than the XT variant – which is marketed to be more powerful than the former.
The testing was performed on an ASUS PRIME edition of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 GPU – BIOS flashed onto the device were also from the same variant.
Here are the test results, performed by forum member Gurdi at PCGamesHardware:
- RX 9070 Non-XT Without BIOS Mod: 2140-2610 MHz @ 220W
- RX 9070 Non-XT With BIOS Mod: 2480-3030 MHz @ 317W
The user performed other synthetic tests, which showcased that the card was able to outperform the Radeon RX 9070 XT, which has more cores than the PRIME edition – this applied for gaming performance as well.
Flashing or modding GPUs comes with an innate risk of damaging the hardware. Wcftech advises extra caution for those looking to modify their AMD GPUs.
AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 released on March 6, 2025 – the GPU has 16 GB GDDR6 with memory speeds up to 20 Gbps. The hardware offers significant improvements in ray tracing performance compared to its predecessors, and is positioned as a direct competitor to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5070.
