Key points

  1. Data from Newzoo reveals that 67% of PC gamers play games that are six years or older.
  2. Further breakdown reveals that the top games in that category are all live-service games.
  3. In 2023, PlayStation announced its intention to put out live-service games but has since canceled projects after Concord’s disastrous release.

A report by PC Gamer reveals that the overwhelming majority of PC gamers prefer to play games that are six years or older. This report apparently came from data provided by Newzoo.

According to PC Gamer’s report, data collected by Newzoo from January 2024 to December 2024 shows that 67% of player hours on PC were all spent on games that are six years old or older. The report even had a breakdown of the 67% mentioned:

  • 7.1% of the total hours spent were on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / Counter-Strike 2
  • 6.4% were in League of Legends
  • 6.2% were in Roblox
  • 5.8% were in Dota 2
  • 5.4% were in Fortnite

Presumably, these are the top games in the category and all of them are live-service games.

Continuing with the percentages, 25% of player hours are spent on games that are two to five years old, while the remaining 8% are all on games that are less than two years old. This data further shows that live-service games can really hook players for this long and become a continuous cash cow for studios.

In 2023, PlayStation has made their intent clear that they want to create live-service games. However, Concord’s disastrous release might have put a dent on their plans as the company has canceled a number of live-service games being developed.
