  3. Mountaintop Studios laid off people in September 2024, one month after Spectre Divide’s release.

Mountaintop Studios revealed that the studio will be closing down this week with Spectre Divide following after a month. The reason for closure is the studio’s inability to support the game as well as itself.

The announcement was posted on Spectre Divide’s Twitter. According to the post, the team was optimistic about the game during the first week due to having around 400,000 players playing the game. But the game continued to bleed players which resulted in lower revenue.

“But as time has gone on, we haven’t seen enough active players and incoming revenue to cover the day-to-day costs of Spectre and the studio,” the developers continued. They have also tried every avenue to keep the game going, but weren’t able to make it work.

As such, the studio is closing its door within the week and Spectre Divide will follow within the next 30 days. “Game development is full of twists, turns, and surprises, and the industry has changed dramatically since we started the project in 2020. Even though we missed the mark this time, we wouldn’t trade the journey for anything,” the post read.

Spectre Divide was released in August 2024, with the Mountaintop Studios laying off people just a month after its release. The game currently has mixed reviews on Steam, but it’s also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
