AMD Chips Away at Nvidia’s Market Share as GPU Shipments Surge in Q4 2024

|
- AMD captured 7% of Nvidia’s market share in Q4 2024, shipping 1.43 million desktop GPUs.
- Nvidia retained 82% of the market but lost around 8% of the discrete desktop GPU market due to shifting production toward data center GPUs.
- Intel gained 1.2% of the discrete desktop GPU market in the final quarter of 2024.
AMD managed to grab a chunk of Nvidia’s desktop GPU market share in the final quarter of 2024. According to Jon Peddie Research, AMD shipped 1.43 million Radeon GPUs in Q4 2024, marking its best quarter of the year, though still trailing its Q4 2023 numbers of 1.81 million units.
Despite AMD’s gain, Nvidia remained dominant in the industry, shipping 6.89 million desktop GPUs in the same period. However, due to production constraints and a shift in focus toward data center GPUs, Nvidia lost around 8% of the discrete desktop GPU market in Q4, with AMD picking up approximately 7% and Intel gaining 1.2%.
Overall, the discrete GPU market saw 8.4 million shipments in Q4, up from 8.1 million in Q3, though still down from 9.5 million in Q4 2023. Industry-wide, 34.7 million desktop GPUs were shipped throughout 2024, showing an increase from 31 million in 2023 but a drop from 38 million in 2022. While no major GPU launches took place in 2024 aside from refreshed Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40 Super models, demand remained strong, with orders carrying over into early 2025.

However, with new tariffs set to hit in Q2 2025, the usual seasonal dip in shipments could be even steeper unless backlog orders help cushion the impact.
