Key points
  1. Discord is in talks to go public, reportedly meeting with investment bankers about a possible IPO this year.
  2. Founded in 2025 has grown into a major social platform with 227 million monthly active users.
  3. According to the last evaluation in 2021, Discord was valued at $15 billion.

Discord is reportedly in early talks to go public, potentially launching an initial public offering (IPO) within the year. According to reports from The New York Times and Financial Times, the popular gaming-focused chat platform has been meeting with investment bankers to explore the move.

Originally launched in 2015 by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy, the company was last valued at $15 billion in 2021. Shortly after that evaluation, Discord turned down the following $10 billion offer from Microsoft, causing rumors that it may pursue an IPO.

As many tech companies have put their IPO plans on hold due to political and market uncertainty in 2021, the current year is expected to renew IPO talks as interest rates have fallen and US President Donald Trump has laid out a more tech-friendly regulatory agenda.

“We understand there is a lot of interest around Discord’s future plans, but we do not comment on rumors or speculation,” a spokesperson told the Financial Times. “Our focus remains on delivering the best possible experience for our users and building a strong, sustainable business.”

Discord has evolved from a niche gaming chat service, expanding its reach beyond PC, integrating natively with PlayStation and Xbox consoles, further solidifying its position as a leading communication platform for gamers and broader online communities and reaching over 227 million monthly active users in 2024, showing a 16.05% growth over its 2023 monthly active users.

The main advantage of the platform remains the fact that, unlike larger rivals such as Meta, X, and Reddit, the company avoided advertising, instead focusing on generating revenue by offering premium features to its users for a fee.
As of the time of writing, Discord is the 27th most visited website in the world, remaining officially blocked in Russia, Turkey and China.
