Creator of Super Smash Bros. and Kirby, Masahiro Sakurai, received the Art Encouragement Prize from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs for his YouTube series dedicated to game design.
Launched in 2022, Kirby creator’s YouTube channel Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games offers an in-depth, easy-to-understand look at the game design process. The episodes cover a range of topics, from the intricacies of character design to the complex work behind level creation.

Sakurai responded to the award humbly, jokingly asking if he could now call himself a “cultural person.” He also noted that he had recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Association of Media in Digital Awards.
The English version of Masahiro’s YouTube channel gained over 200,000 subscribers less than 24 hours after its launch. Also, it is worth noting that in 2023, the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association recognized Sakurai’s contribution to the education of game design with the Game Design and Visual Arts awards.
