Nvidia’s Manufacturing Nightmare Is Still Ongoing as Redditor Spot Defective RTX 5080

|
- A Reddit user spots their RTX 5080 GPU missing a few ROPs compared to the official specifications.
- Nvidia has acknowledged this issue and says that this only affects 0.5% of the GPUs and advises people who have a GPU like this to contact the board manufacturer for replacement.
- Last week, Nvidia also cut off support for PhysX which resulted in some games using the engines to have bad frame rates.
Nvidia’s problems with their 50-series GPUs seems to have no end as a Reddit user posted a screenshot of their 5080 GPU missing 8 Render Output Units (ROP) and performing 12% less effectively from how it’s supposed to be.
The post was first spotted on r/pcmasterrace subreddit where gingeraffe90 shared their experience with the RTX 5080 they just bought. According to them, while they were checking their GPU using GPU-Z, they found out that their ROPs are only 104 compared to the official specs of the RTX 5080 which should be 112.
They then ran a 3D Mark Time Spy benchmark which showed a 12% drop from the GPU’s expected performance. The user has already done a clean wipe of their video drivers and has reinstalled the drivers provided by Nvidia’s website before doing the benchmark.
On February 22, Nvidia admitted that there might be a manufacturing issue regarding RTX 5090 and 5070 Ti. According to a report from The Verge, the company has identified a rare issue only affecting less than 0.5% of the GPUs. The Nvidia representative also advises consumers who ran into this problem to contact the board manufacturer of the GPU they bought for a replacement. On February 25, Nvidia also acknowledged the existence of the problem for the RTX 5080. The company advises everyone affected to do the same.
Just last week, Nvidia cut off support for PhysX for the 50-series. This resulted in gamers using the GPU family to suffer bad frame drops when playing games that use the engine.
