Key points
  1. Marvel Rivals has released the pick and win rates of each hero for the first half of Season 1.
  2. Storm has a low pick rate but a high win rate. The lowest win rate hero is Black Widow.
  3. Recently, layoffs happened in NetEase and Thaddeus Sasser’s whole team was let go. Sasser is the Game Director of Marvel Rivals.

NetEase has released the pick rate and win rates of each hero for the first half of season 1. Cloak & Dagger as well as Invisible Woman are the most picked heroes on both consoles and PC.

However, despite them leading the pick rate, one of the lowest picked heroes actually has the highest win rate. Storm only has a 3.73% pick rate, but her win rate is 58.11%. The highest win rate in both console and PC. Her win rate is more pronounced in PC though, as the next highest win rate hero next to her is Mantis with only 55.65% win rate. Almost a 3% deficit.

The lowest pick rate hero in all of Marvel Rivals is also the lowest win rate hero. Black Widow has a 2.76% pick rate and only has a 42.31% win rate. The next hero after that is Iron Fist with a 3.11% pick rate and a 49.95% win rate. This win rate difference indicates a problem with the hero.

Developers sometimes use pick and win rates to determine the balance of a game. If a lot of players play a certain hero, it might indicate that the hero is strong. Usually, developers would want to keep a hero’s win rate as close as possible to 50%. However, it’s also not as easy as nerfing the strong heroes and buffing the weaker ones. Balancing a game is much more delicate than that.

Marvel Rivals was released back in December 2024. Recently, the team of Marvel Rivals Director, Thaddeus Sasser, was laid off from NetEase. It’s unknown how many were let go and NetEase still hasn’t acknowledged the layoffs.
