Rockstar Allegedly in Talks to Bring Roblox-Style Custom Worlds to GTA 6

|
- Rockstar seems to be exploring the implementation of user-generated content and custom experiences in GTA 6.
- Rockstar is reportedly in talks with creators from platforms like Fortnite and Roblox, as well as dedicated GTA content creators.
- Take-Two’s CEO hinted that GTA Online can continue running alongside the new game, citing the example of NBA 2K Online.
Rockstar is allegedly exploring the creation of a metaverse-style experience within Grand Theft Auto 6. They are also discussing the possibility of integrating user-generated experiences into the upcoming open-world title with high-profile creators from platforms like Fortnite and Roblox, as well as dedicated GTA content creators.
According to a recent report from Digiday, anonymous sources close to the matter revealed that Rockstar is considering a system where creators could modify GTA 6’s environment and assets, potentially even incorporating their own intellectual property, including brand sponsorships.
This move comes on the heels of Rockstar’s 2023 acquisition of team Cfx.re behind the popular GTA 5 FiveM and RDR2 RedM multiplayer mods, the same team that got banned in GTA 5 back in 2015.
While talks remain open-ended, the exact details of how creators would benefit from such collaborations are unclear.
In contrast to other platforms like Roblox, where creators earn revenue through virtual item sales and content monetization, it’s uncertain how Rockstar plans to compensate creators for their involvement in GTA 6 beyond the exposure of having their creations in one of the world’s most popular gaming franchises.
Meanwhile, as GTA 6 gears up for a fall 2025 release, Rockstar has yet to clarify whether the current iteration of GTA Online will transition to a new version or continue alongside the new game.
CEO of Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games, Strauss Zelnick, recently hinted at the possibility of maintaining legacy titles, citing the example of NBA 2K Online, which saw two separate versions running simultaneously for years.
“I’m going to speak theoretically only because I’m not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn’t been made,” said Zelnick. “We [Take-Two Interactive Software] have shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
Take-Two’s CEO states that the new Grand Theft Auto is in plans for console-only release autumn of 2025, while Corsair’s CEO predicts that the PC port of GTA 6 is coming early in 2026.
As of February 2025, Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) has sold over 210 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.
