The first E Ink-powered gaming console, Ink Console, has officially received a 2025 launch date along with a development roadmap. Designed for text-based interactive games, the device aims to bring back gamebooks—a genre that blends storytelling with player-driven choices.

The upcoming gadget based on electronic paper display technology is inspired by 1980s computer games and the “Choose Your Own Adventure” book series. Each of the planned titles of the new console implies that the user’s choices will shape the fate of the characters and the development of the plot.

The creator of Ink Console has shared with Gaming.News gadget’s launch date and roadmap for 2025. The mind behind the device, known as ‘’Dana’’ in the community of retro video game development, said that Ink Console’s crowdfunding campaign is kicking off on March 1st and going to last for a month, after which production will begin, with deliveries scheduled between September and November 2025.

Ink Console is designed to be an open-source platform, enabling users to create and share their own gamebooks using the You Create development kit that will be shared soon after launch. The device will be compatible with general e-book formats, allowing users to read various types of digital books (excluding proprietary formats like AZW). However, gamebooks created for the gadget via the You Create tool will be only readable within the Ink Console system.

The device will get a 7.5-inch E Ink screen. It will be powered by an ESP32-D0WDQ6 dual-core processor with 4MB flash memory and 8MB PSRAM. The gadget will also get Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 4.2, SD card support, and a 5000 mAh lithium-ion battery.

Alongside the crowdfunding campaign, Ink Console has ambitious plans for the future:

  • Expanding the available gamebook library from six to 20 titles,
  • Launching the You Create system to empower writers,
  • Establishing an online store for gamebooks and add-ons.
