Key points

  1. The PlayStation 5 has sold 75 million units worldwide.
  2. The console was a target of scalping which made it hard to purchase the first few years of its release.
  3. The supply problem was fixed two years into the console’s lifespan.

The PlayStation 5 console has sold over 75 million units worldwide according to the latest financial results that Sony uploaded. During the third fiscal quarter of 2024, Sony was able to sell 9.5 million units.

Last year, the PlayStation 5 sold 20.8 million units worldwide and this fiscal year’s first quarter to third quarter amounts to 15.7 million units. This year’s third quarter was the only quarter where Sony was able to sell more units than the same quarter last year.

Previous sales of the PS5 is as follows:

  • 2020: 7.8 million
  • 2021: 11.5 million
  • 2022: 19.1 million

Aside from this, monthly active users of PlayStation Network are seeing an upward trend. Year-over-Year, the third quarter of 2024 saw a 6 million increase in users. This quarter also saw the most amount of first party titles sold in 2024, with 11.6 million. An increase in digital downloads was also seen this quarter with 74% of software sales being digital.

The PlayStation 5 was introduced in November 2020 and was heavily impacted by scalping. It was only after two years into its lifespan that the console became widely available in storefronts. The PS5 Pro was also a target of scalping during its release in 2024, however since the Pro was virtually available in almost all retailers, scalpers were forced to sell the console below retail price.
