- Euro Truck Simulator 2 was used in an experiment because it was a safer alternative to actual driving.
- The experiment aims to improve the accuracy of a smart shirt used to monitor fatigue.
- The researcher’s name is Martinka and they’re from the Czech Republic.
A researcher from the Czech Republic Martinka is using Euro Truck Simulator 2 to test a smart shirt designed to detect driver fatigue and prevent accidents caused by microsleep — brief, involuntary sleep episodes that can be dangerous on the road. The game provides a safe environment to simulate long-haul driving conditions, helping to refine the technology without real-world risks.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 was used in the experiment because of its safety. The participant doesn’t have to be on the highway driving especially since the experiment aims to mimic real-life driving schedules of truckers. Their schedules can sometimes extend to a maximum of seven hours of straight driving. All of this while wearing the t-shirt they’ve designed.
The shirt Martinka is developing hopes to notify the person whether they’re already fatigued while driving. According to him, even if there may already be fatigue sensors in modern cars, their smart T-shirts give a more reliable solution. The shirts are also washable.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 was released back in 2012 and is still going strong. The last update to the game was a DLC that allows players to visit Greece. The update was released in December of 2024.
