- Bungie is adding an extra Destiny 2 Contest Mode weekend after a major PSN outage blocked many PlayStation players from participating.
- Destiny 2’s latest dungeon launched with a 48-hour Contest Mode offering a unique emblem for completion.
- PSN remains offline for over 21 hours, affecting Destiny 2 players globally, with no estimated fix time from Sony.
Bungie has announced an additional Sundered Doctrine Contest Mode weekend for all Destiny 2 platforms, following a significant PlayStation Network (PSN) outage that prevented many PlayStation players from participating in the event. The outage, which began on February 7, 2025, lasted over 20 hours, leaving a substantial portion of the player base unable to access the game during the limited-time event.
The Sundered Doctrine is a newly introduced dungeon in Destiny 2, launched on February 7. Its initial 48-hour Contest Mode offers increased difficulty and stringent gear and team requirements, with successful completion granting a unique emblem available only during this period. Due to the PSN disruption, PlayStation owners will most likely be unable to attempt the dungeon within the designated timeframe (at press time, PSN remains offline with downtime now exceeding 21 hours).
In response, Bungie stated, “Due to issues affecting PlayStation players’ ability to sign in to Destiny 2, we are planning an additional Sundered Doctrine Contest Mode weekend for all platforms. Specific dates and times will be announced at a later date.” The studio clarified that while the Sundered Doctrine Race has concluded, this additional weekend will provide an opportunity for fireteams impacted by the outage to attempt the dungeon at Contest Difficulty and earn the emblem.
What remains unclear is whether the current gear restrictions will carry over to the additional Contest Mode weekend. Before the launch of Sundered Doctrine, Bungie confirmed that several weapons and perks would be disabled during Contest Mode due to balance concerns. The list includes:
• Microcosm (disabled across all activities in the game)
• Auto-Loading Holster (Legendary perk)
• Class-specific Exotic Glaives
• Lord of Wolves (Exotic Solar Shotgun)
• Volatile Marksman (Artifact mod that grants Volatile Rounds with rapid Void hits and kills)
• Spirit of the Necrotic and Spirit of the Filaments perks on the Warlock’s Solipsism Exotic class item
Bungie has yet to clarify whether these restrictions will remain in place for the additional Contest Mode weekend.
While exact figures are not officially disclosed, it’s widely recognized that a significant portion of Destiny 2’s player base is on PlayStation consoles. Players are advised to stay tuned for further updates regarding the rescheduled Contest Mode weekend.
Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) has been experiencing a significant outage since approximately 6 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, February 7, 2025, affecting PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users globally. The disruption has impacted various services, including online gaming, account management, and access to the PlayStation Store. As of now, the downtime has extended to 21 hours, leaving players unable to access online features. Sony has acknowledged the issue and stated that they are working to resolve it as soon as possible. However, no specific details regarding the cause of the outage or an estimated time for resolution have been provided.
