2K and Firaxis Games are bringing Sid Meier’s Civilization VII to virtual reality, marking the franchise’s first venture into immersive gameplay. Civilization VII VR is set to launch in Spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The exact release date and pricing have not yet been announced.

The VR adaptation places players above a “Command Table,” offering a strategic top-down view of the game world. The virtual reality mode transports players into a grand museum setting, while mixed reality allows them to project the game onto real-world surfaces like a desk or kitchen table.

The game will support both single-player and online multiplayer, where up to four players can compete or collaborate. In multiplayer, opponents appear as digital avatars of their chosen leaders around the Command Table.

Dennis Shirk, executive franchise producer at Firaxis Games, called the move into VR a “milestone for the Civilization franchise.” The studio aims to provide an immersive way to engage with the long-running strategy series.

Civilization VII VR is now available for wishlist on the Meta Store. Meanwhile, the standard edition of Civilization VII is already accessible to players who purchased select editions starting at $99, which include early access. The full release is scheduled for February 11, 2025, across multiple platforms, including PC and consoles.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII has received a mixed critical reception since early access began. Major outlets mostly praised its mechanics, structured playthrough ages, and enhanced role-playing elements. However, player feedback on Steam has been less favorable, with the game holding a “Mixed” rating due to UI issues, balance concerns, and technical problems. Developer Firaxis has acknowledged the criticism and plans to address key issues with a major patch scheduled for March.
