Key points

  1. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake surpasses company’s sales expectations with over 2 million copies sold.
  2. Square Enix’s overall video game sales are on a year-to-year decline.
  3. The decline is largely attributed to the cancellation of multiple Mobile game titles.

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake reportedly achieved over 2 million copies shipped and downloaded, exceeding Square Enix’s typically high sales expectations. Having been released on November 14, 2024, the remake became the best-selling game in Japan within the first week of debut.

Sales for the company’s other recent titles, such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, reportedly fell short of expectations, suggesting an overall high sales target. For context, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth achieved over two million sales as well.

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake sales figures surpassing expectations suggests the company may have set more conservative sales targets this time around. Of course, it is possible the game simply performed exceptionally well.

Despite the success of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, Square Enix’s overall net sales appear to be on a decline.

The largest attributing factor to the decline is the shutdown of various mobile games – which typically serve as massive revenue sources. Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia were both shut down in 2024, while Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier ended in 2023.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake follows a traditional JRPG format. Players adventure the world with the goal of eventually defeating the Archfield Baramos. The game showcases revamped visuals that bring a modern charm to nostalgic 2D graphics – creating an experience that both feels contemporary and nostalgic at the same time.
