Key points
  1. The latest update introduces cold and warm cow variants, specifically adapted for snowy and desert biomes.
  2. Firefly bushes and dead bushes are new interactive features in the swamp and desert regions, lighting up at night.
  3. These features are being implemented on Minecraft: Java Edition.

Minecraft’s first game drop of 2025 is coming closer – meaning more features are going into testing to prepare for the future update.

On January 29, Minecraft officially revealed new gameplay elements entering Minecraft: Java Edition. Java Edition is a PC version of the game catered towards easier modifications, serving as a testing grounds for new features.

Included in the upcoming update are two new cow variants.

“Coated in fluffy fur, our cold cow brings cozy with them wherever they go – which is lucky, since it’s picked the snow-swept chilly biomes as its home. Our auburn warm cow can instead be found kicking up dust in the sandy biomes,” said Linn Viberg, the author of the official announcement.

Similar to the original cow, these two new cow variants are “a great source for leather, milk, and beef.”

Another teased inclusion are Firefly bushes, which serve as an essential light source for when exploring after dark.

“This new plant block spawns dancing firefly particles that – listen to this – glow in the dark. […] You can bury the firefly bush below other blocks to make them sparkle! Trek to swamps and bodies of water (during the day, obviously) to retrieve the firefly bush, and then you can use bone meal to grow more in the safety of your own home” the official Minecraft representative shared.

Other noted features joining Minecraft: Java edition include ambient desert sounds alongside a new bush, stated to appear in forests, birch forests, plains, windswept hills, and other green biomes.

To test these new features, players must install Snapshot within the Minecraft Launcher for the Java Edition. For more detailed instructions, check out the official Minecraft webpage.
