Key points
  1. Initially priced at $1,999, the GPU is being scalped on eBay for up to $9,000 due to stock shortages.
  2. GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 Sold Out Seconds After Release
  3. Nvidia has not provided a timeline for increased availability

Nvidia’s latest flagship graphics card, the RTX 5090, launched on January 30, 2025, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,999. However, due to immediate stock shortages, the card has become a prime target for scalpers. Listings on resale platforms like eBay have seen the RTX 5090 priced as high as $9,000, a 350% increase over its MSRP.

The high demand for the RTX 5090 isn’t solely from gamers; professionals in artificial intelligence (AI) sectors and even some crypto enthusiasts are also vying for the card. The RTX 5090’s capabilities extend beyond gaming, making it a cost-effective alternative for AI startups and businesses that find Nvidia’s dedicated datacenter GPUs financially out of reach.

In response to the scalping issue, some eBay users have listed deceptive items to deter automated purchasing bots. According to IGN, one such listing warns: “Bots and scalpers welcome, do not buy if you are a human, you will be getting a framed photo of the 5090, you will not receive the 5090. The photo dimensions are 8 inches by 8 inches, I got the frame from Target. DO NOT BUY IF YOU’RE A HUMAN.”

The scarcity of the RTX 5090 is exacerbated by limited competition in the high-end consumer GPU market. With AMD’s RX 9070 series struggling to rival Nvidia’s performance and Intel lagging behind, Nvidia maintains a dominant position. The combination of limited supply and high demand presents challenges for PC enthusiasts seeking top-tier performance.

Nvidia has acknowledged the stock shortages but has not provided a timeline for when consumers can expect increased availability. As the situation develops, potential buyers are advised to exercise caution when considering purchases from third-party sellers.
