Key points
  1. Sony dropped the previously mandatory PSN account requirement for PC games.
  2. The decision follows previous Helldivers 2 controversy.
  3. Players who sign into PSN will receive additional benefits .

Sony announced that Playstation Network accounts will no longer be mandatory for certain PC versions of their games – a policy that previously created massive controversy for popular shooter, Helldivers 2.

The company required players to link a PlayStation Network account to access Helldivers 2, insisting doing so increased privacy protection. They enforced the policy months after the game’s release. But because PSN is not available in all countries, some players found themselves locked out of a game they had already purchased.

To avoid this issue, Sony is instead rewarding players for connecting their PSN account, rather than making it mandatory to access the game. By connecting, players can receive exclusive in-game items, trophies, and friend management features.

Here is the list of exclusive rewards in-game items:

  • Marvel Spider-Man 2
    • Early unlock suits: The spider-Man 2099 black suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit
  • God of War Ragnarok:
    • Gain access to the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos at the first Lost Items chest in the Realm Between Realms (previously only accessible in a New Game+ run) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP)
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
    • +50 points to activate bonus features and unlock extras
    • Jordan’s Jacket from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a skin for Ellie
  • Horizon Dawn Remastered
    • Gain access to Nora Valiant outfit

The change in policy was created in preparation for the release of Spider-Man 2, launching on PC later this week. But the policy will be applied to other games as well, such as God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming PC port of The Last of Us 2.

Not all Sony games will adapt this policy – according to GamesRadar, Until Dawn and Lego Horizon Adventures will still require a PSN sign in.
