A dedicated modder is attempting to recreate a full-scale GTA 6 map within GTA 5’s engine. While the project has gained widespread attention and support from the GTA community, it also has raised concerns about potential legal action from Take-Two Interactive, known for its aggressive stance towards fan-made projects.
Modder and content creator Dark Space is reconstructing the GTA 6 map by referencing a community-created map compiled from trailers and other unofficial sources. Progress updates have been shared regularly on social media, where the project has gained widespread attention.
“I spent four days making this, but that’s nothing compared to Rockstar. This illusion breaks quickly when going down the street too far or going inside a building. Rockstar’s map is going to be seamless, and made by real professionals, the only thing that matches Rockstar’s version here is the scale,” he said in a YouTube video.
In an exclusive interview with IGN, Dark Space said that the mod should be ready to release “in around two weeks.” However, the modder acknowledged the risk of a potential takedown by Take-Two Interactive, who has quite a history of shutting down similar fan projects.
One of the most recent notable examples is a modding group known as Revolution Team that developed a similar project, where they aimed to integrate GTA: Vice City’s content into the GTA IV engine, rebranding it as GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition. Take-Two Interactive allegedly responded by shutting down their YouTube channel, and the team then responded by launching the project as a standalone game to essentially bypass the shutdown.
Obbe Vermeij, who previously worked at Rockstar as a developer for GTA 3, commented on this, saying, “Take-Two Interactive/Rockstar is a commercial company. They will take down mods that interfere with their business interests.”
“It would be the first custom-made map mod they’ve taken down for GTA 5 that didn’t directly port from some other game,” Dark Space states, indicating his intent to continue working despite shutdown concerns.
The previous entry, GTA V, sold over 200 million copies worldwide, fueling immense anticipation for GTA VI. The new installment takes place in fictional Leonida, a virtual parallel to real-life Florida. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the game for over a decade, and after years of development and multiple delays, it is now slated for a Fall 2025 release – assuming there are no further delays.
