Sony has overhauled its leadership structure, abandoning PlayStation’s dual-CEO model less than a year after its introduction. On January 29, Sony announced that Hermen Hulst has stepped down as co-CEO, with Hideaki Nishino set to take over as President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) starting April 1.

However, Hulst will continue to lead PlayStation’s first-party division, meaning the reorganization won’t significantly impact the company’s day-to-day operations.

This leadership change comes as Hiroki Totoki prepares to step into his new role as President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation on April 1, 2025. Nishino, previously Senior Vice President of Platform Experience, will now lead SIE, overseeing PlayStation’s hardware, software, and network services. Despite his promotion, Nishino will continue to play a key role in shaping PlayStation’s strategic direction, while Hulst remains focused on first-party game development as Head of PlayStation Studios.

“I’m truly honored to take the helm at Sony Interactive Entertainment”, said Hideaki Nishino in the press release. He promises that they “will continue to grow the PlayStation community in new ways” and also deliver the best in technology innovation. He also thanked Hulst in his message citing that he’s thankful for his expertise and leadership.

Hideaki Nishino was promoted to CEO together with Hermen Hulst in June 2024 with Hulst taking care of the Studio Business Group and Nishino heading the Platform Business Group. With Nishino taking the top CEO position on April 1, Hulst will now report to Nishino.

Lin Tao, SIE’s current Senior Vice President of Finance, will also move to a new position in Sony Group Corporation as the new CFO. No replacement has been announced for her position as of writing.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is home to more than 12,000 employees from all over the world as of 2023. In February 2024, the company was hit by layoffs which resulted in 8% of the company losing their jobs.
