Singaporean game developer and publisher of free online games, Garena, has unveiled the Free Fire 2025 esports roadmap, introducing a revamped format and confirming Indonesia as the host of the Free Fire World Series (FFWS) Global Finals.

The announcement revealed details of a new company’s talent development initiative aimed at supporting local communities and strengthening the competitive ecosystem.

The 2025 Free Fire esports season kicks off in April with regional FFWS leagues spanning Brazil, Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as Pakistan. The Southeast Asia region will host two major tournaments in Hanoi and Bangkok, with the Spring edition set to feature 18 teams from April 25 to June 15.

Top teams from these regional leagues will qualify for the Esports World Cup: Free Fire, scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 15 to 20. The event will be the year’s first major international Free Fire tournament, with its champion securing a spot at the FFWS Global Finals.

For the first time, the FFWS Global Finals will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, across three weekends in November. The event will feature 18 teams competing for the championship, building on the success of last year’s edition in Rio de Janeiro, which peaked at 731,970 viewers, marking the highest viewership in two years, according to Esports Charts.

Garena has also introduced several format changes aimed at increasing competitiveness and viewer engagement. One of the biggest shifts is replacing the traditional three-day final weekend with a “Point Rush” phase across all tournaments, leading into the Grand Final.

Additionally, the Champion Rush Point system will now determine the Global Finals winner. The first team to achieve a predetermined rush point and secure the next Booyah! will be crowned champions. Other modifications include double elimination points in the last game of each Knockout Stage matchday and a new rule requiring every team member to equip a different active skill, promoting strategic diversity.

Garena is also launching the Global Talent Development Programme, designed to empower teams, players, and content creators. The initiative will provide workshops and mentorships from industry professionals to support competitive growth and community development.

Garena’s Free Fire free-to-play battle royale game developed and published by Garena for Android and iOS, became the most downloaded mobile game globally in 2019 and has over 1 billion downloads on Google Play Store.
