CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, confirmed the plans to bring Xbox games on Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Gamertag Radio podcast, Spencer expressed enthusiasm for supporting the next-generation console, adding weight to reports suggesting Xbox titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Halo: The Master Chief Collection may arrive on the Japanese system.
“Nintendo and their innovation, what they mean in this industry, I just always applaud the moves that they make,” Spencer said, referencing Nintendo’s recent Switch 2 reveal. “Really looking forward to supporting them with the games that we have. I just think they’re such an important part of this industry.”
Microsoft’s support for the Switch 2 would continue according to the Xbox’s strategy that has already brought Xbox titles like Minecraft, Pentiment, and Grounded to the original Switch. Spencer also highlighted Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand multiplatform access, with recent releases like Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle arriving on PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox consoles and PC.
“I want everybody to be able to play on Xbox, and it does mean more of our games shipping on more platforms,” Spencer said. “We love the work that we do with Nintendo, we love what we do with Valve on Steam, and that’s going to continue.”
Spencer praised Nintendo’s decision to make the Switch 2 a larger console, joking that the bigger screen would be appreciated by “my old eyes.” He also congratulated Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa on the reveal, noting the success of the original Switch and expressing confidence in its successor. “Switch is a massive success, and I think Switch 2 will be as well. Who would ever bet against the success of that team? They are just masterful in what they do.”
Reports suggest that Microsoft’s decision to bring more games to the platform will depend on its ability to handle demanding titles. Jez Corden of Windows Central hinted that most Xbox games (presumably both from the old and new console generations) could launch on the Switch 2, provided the console’s hardware meets performance requirements.
Spencer emphasized that prioritizing game quality and accessibility remains a key focus for Microsoft. “What we learned is put the games first. Make sure the games can be as great as they can. Our games will show up in more and more places, no doubt.”
