- The Assassin’s Creed franchise has sold over 200 million copies worldwide.
- As for now, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for release in March 2025.
- Reports suggest that Ubisoft is in discussions with Tencent about a potential buyout.
Ubisoft has announced a second delay for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a new episode of its flagship action-adventure stealth game series. Scheduled for launch on Feb. 14, the game is now expected to be released on March 20..
According to the official statement made on X by the director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Marc-Alexis Coté, on behalf of all teams working on the game, ”The additional month of development is aimed at refining the game and incorporating valuable player feedback, ensuring a polished day-one experience.”
Ubisoft had already postponed the game’s release before. The launch was moved from initial November 2024 to February 2025. But despite all delays, Ubisoft is optimistic about the future of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its potential to become one of the most popular chapters in the franchise. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot expressed full support for the development teams, stating, “We are all behind our teams’ efforts to create the most ambitious Assassin’s Creed opus, and this decision reflects our dedication to fully realizing the potential of the game.”
Assassin’s Creed, with over 200 million copies sold worldwide, remains one of the most glorified Ubisoft game series, along with Tom Clancy’s, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Just Dance, Rayman and Prince of Persia.
However, the delay comes at a difficult time for the French publisher, which is grappling with multiple setbacks in the wake of a challenging 2024. Ubisoft has faced criticism for underperforming titles, including Star Wars Outlaws, which failed to meet sales expectations. Additionally, the closure of production studios and the XDefiant shutdown have further compounded the company’s struggles. Reports suggest that Ubisoft is in discussions with Tencent about a potential buyout as it explores ways to stabilize its financial position.
In light of these challenges, Ubisoft has also committed to significant cost reductions, projecting a €200 million ($205 million) decrease in its fixed cost base by FY2025-26.
These efforts are part of the company’s broader strategic review, which also includes the return of Assassin’s Creed Shadows to Steam after a period of Epic Games Store exclusivity.
