The third-person shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2,  developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, sold 4.5 million copies within its first month of release.

New financial reports reveal the game’s monumental impact on Games Workshop, the British manufacturer of miniature wargames whose most well-known products are Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 (40K), whose CEO Kevin Rountree described it as a standout achievement.

For the first half of its financial year ending Dec. 1, 2024, Games Workshop reported a staggering £26.1 million ($31.8 million) in earned income from licensing, with Space Marine 2 leading the charge. This marks a nearly fivefold increase from the previous year’s £5.9 million ($7.2 million). Overall, licensing revenue climbed by £18 million ($21.9 million) to £30.1 million ($36.7 million), with PC and console games accounting for 98% of the total.

“We recognize that successes like these for Warhammer are not given in the world of video games. Clearly, we are looking for the next one,” Rountree noted in a statement, acknowledging the challenges of replicating such a blockbuster hit.

Potential contenders for Warhammer’s next gaming sensation are already in development. Saber Interactive has hinted at ideas for a third installment in the Space Marine series, while Bulwark Studios’ upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II promises to deliver a tactical turn-based experience.

Despite its initial success, Saber Interactive is far from done with Space Marine 2. The developer has kept the community engaged with new content, including cosmetics, weapons, and Operations. Season 3 is set to launch in the spring of 2025.

On top of success in the video game industry, Games Workshop is about to broaden its Warhammer 40,000 universe with a new series adaptation. After two years of negotiations, Amazon Studios and Games Workshop have finalized an agreement to bring this expansive universe to the screen starring Henry Cavill, a well-known fan of Warhammer 40,000.
