While the short teaser video released by Nintendo only showed glimpses of the new hardware, it confirmed that the Switch 2 will get a larger screen and redesigned Joy-Con controllers.

As part of the grand reveal, Nintendo also confirmed that the Nintendo Direct event will provide the first comprehensive details about the console, including its launch date and new features. ‘’Nintendo Switch 2 will air on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, offering a closer look at Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to Nintendo Switch releasing in 2025,” Nintendo stated on its official website.

The first-ever Nintendo Direct aired in October 2011, showcasing upcoming titles for the Nintendo 3DS. Since then, Directs has become a major way for Nintendo to connect directly with its audience, bypassing traditional press events and offering immediate, detailed announcements. Since the very first event, Nintendo Direct has experienced a great number of different iterations:

  • Nintendo Direct, a standard presentation with updates on various games, features, and consoles.
  • Nintendo Direct at E3, a special Nintendo Direct that used to take place during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), often showcasing major upcoming releases.
  • Nintendo Direct Mini, a shorter version of the regular Direct, often focuses on smaller updates, announcements, and game reveals.
  • Nintendo Direct for a single game or game series, a Nintendo Direct dedicated to showcasing a specific game or series, such as a special spotlight on a new release or updates for an ongoing franchise.
  • Wii U Direct, a specific Nintendo Direct focused on the Wii U console and its games. It was more prevalent during the Wii U era before the Switch launched.
  • Pokémon Direct (formerly)/Pokémon Presents, a presentation dedicated to Pokémon games and franchise news. Pokémon Direct has since been renamed Pokémon Presents.
  • Nintendo 3DS Direct, a version of the Nintendo Direct, focused specifically on the Nintendo 3DS handheld console and its games.
  • Year of Luigi is a special year-long series of Nintendo Directs dedicated to Luigi, the iconic character, and his own themed games and events.
  • Super Smash Bros. Direct is a Nintendo Direct presentation centered around the Super Smash Bros. series, including new characters, stages, and features.
  • Nintendo Direct Micro, a shorter, smaller format Direct presentation that was released as a brief update on specific topics, often featuring a single announcement.
  • Nindies Showcase/Indie Highlights/Indie World, a Nintendo Direct-style presentation focusing on indie games available or coming to Nintendo platforms, often featuring a large variety of smaller titles.
  • Super Nintendo World Direct, a special presentation about the Super Nintendo World theme park attractions, their updates, and various experiences tied to the franchise.
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie Direct is a dedicated presentation showcasing information and trailers for the Super Mario Bros. movie, including behind-the-scenes content and cast details.
  • Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, a direct that highlights third-party developers and their games coming to Nintendo consoles, giving more attention to non-Nintendo franchises.
  • Nintendo Museum Direct is a presentation or event focused on the history of Nintendo, including special exhibits, retrospectives, and celebrations of the company’s legacy.

The last major Nintendo Direct took place in September 2024, revealed key updates to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and teased new DLC for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
