Elon Musk’s recent Path of Exile 2 stream left the gaming community, along with acclaimed and respected hardcore players such as Kripparrian, bewildered as the Tesla CEO and self-proclaimed gaming enthusiast struggled with basic mechanics despite his high-level hardcore character.

The stream, which aired on Jan. 7, featured Musk navigating through endgame content with his level 95 hardcore character. However, what should have been a showcase of his skill instead raised doubts about the authenticity of his gaming self-appointed mastery.

Musk, who has previously boasted about his achievements in Diablo 4, is no stranger to high-level gaming claims. In November 2024, he made headlines for achieving the top spot globally in Diablo 4, where he completed a sub-two-minute Pit 150-speed run, three seconds faster than the world record at the time. However, Path of Exile 2 is a different beast, and the stream revealed a series of odd mistakes that left viewers questioning Elon’s supposed expertise.

The most glaring issue came early in the broadcast when Musk opened his stash and revealed a tab labeled “Elon’s map.” This peculiar labeling raised suspicions that someone else might have curated the content for ease of gameplay. High-level PoE 2 players quickly pointed out that the tab was filled with pre-selected waystones for maps, a sign that perhaps Musk wasn’t the one fully controlling the in-game resources.

As the stream continued, Musk’s gameplay became more erratic. His character, despite having a god-tier gear, struggled to maintain clear speed. He was also seen passing by valuable currency like Exalted and Chaos Orbs without picking them up, something any seasoned PoE player would find unthinkable. At one point, Musk even struggled to refill his mana, failing to use one of the most basic mechanics in the game, a sign that his understanding of the game’s core mechanics might not be as deep as he’d like viewers to believe.

On top of that, Elon appeared confused while navigating his Atlas, the map system that provides modifiers for PoE’s endgame content. He mentioned that there were “four things” on a map node, referring to it as the maximum difficulty, but high-level players quickly pointed out that this was an oversimplification of the game’s complex modifiers.

In between his gameplay stumbles, Musk took time to engage with viewers, answering questions about his ventures at SpaceX and Neuralink, but his distracted play and lack of knowledge about the game mechanics left viewers less than impressed. “It’s pretty good gear, could be better, but it’s pretty great,” Musk said about his character’s equipment, seemingly unaware of the difference between “required level” and “item level,” concepts that are crucial for PoE 2 players.

Musk’s track record of questionable credibility in gaming started when in 2022 he boasted online about his Elden Ring build with rather dubious stats and combination of equipment.

Musk’s performance in Diablo IV has sparked numerous unanswered questions, ranging from his in-game chat being displayed in Chinese to his sudden and remarkable progress. Despite frequently being outperformed by top player Rob2628, he somehow managed to achieve the title of the world’s No. 1 Diablo IV player within just one month, raising suspicions and intrigue within the gaming community.

His actions in Path of Exile 2 has drawn a lot of attention, including Octavian Morosan, a Romanian-Canadian Twitch streamer and YouTuber mostly known by his nickname Kripparrian, who has achieved significant milestones and credibility in the gaming community, including being the first to complete the Diablo III Inferno difficulty with a Hardcore character.

On his YouTube channel Casual Kripp, Octavian released a casual video reaction to Musk’s stream called “Elon Musk Absolutely Clueless Trying to Pilot His PoE2 Account – Kripp reacts to Quin” that supports the community’s narrative and confidence in Elon’s questionable gaming skills.

The common theory that Musk is somehow spending money to get good gear or having someone boost his account to reach such heights has already been expressed many times not only by top players, streamers and the community but also by big world press such as Forbes Business magazine.

In defiance of strict rules Real Money Trading (RMT) and Account Piloting while regular players reportedly get banned for just having too many accounts on their own, Elon is still not banned in PoE2.

As of Dec. 6, 2024, a sequel to 2013th Path of Exile, Path of Exile 2, developed and published by Grinding Gear Games, sold over 1 million copies across Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S prior to its Early Access launch.
