  2. The WWE video game franchise sold about 95 million copies.
  3. WWE 2K25 is rumored to be launched in March.

American video game publisher 2K Sports, a division of 2K Games, officially shut down the servers for the professional wrestling game WWE 2K23 on Jan. 6, 2025 — just 22 months after its launch.

The short lifespan of 2K Sports games is not an isolated incident. The NBA 2K23 servers were shut down in December 2024, a little over two years after the game’s release. In contrast, EA Sports typically keeps the servers for its FIFA and Madden titles running for a significantly longer period.

WWE 2K23, developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K, was released on March 14, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game and all related content were removed from digital stores in November 2024. The server shutdown will affect all online functionalities, including multiplayer matches and the popular Community Creations feature.

WWE 2K23 became the 23rd overall installment of the video game series based on World Wrestling Entertainment and the ninth game under the WWE 2K banner.

WWE 2K23’s cover star was John Cena. Thus, the main feature offered by the game was an interactive documentary game mode revealing top moments throughout Cena’s career.

The server shutdown leaves WWE 2K23 successor, WWE 2K24, as the only game in the franchise with active online support, and WWE 2K25 is rumored to be launched in March, while the WWE video game franchise’s total figure of sold copies is about 95 million units.
