The game unfolds in the tumultuous Second Era, specifically in 2E 583, a time infamous for its political chaos known as the Interregnum. During this period, the Daedric Prince Molag Bal exploits the instability to attempt a full invasion of Tamriel, seeking to draw the realm into his dark dominion of Coldharbour. To accomplish this, he deploys sinister devices known as “Dark Anchors” throughout Tamriel, prompting the Fighters Guild to step up and take action against these threats.
At the same time, the ruling Tharn family of Cyrodiil, led by Empress Regent Clivia Tharn, has forged a dangerous alliance with the King of Worms. This pact empowers the Imperial forces with the resurrection of their fallen soldiers. Meanwhile, the treacherous Mannimarco secretly collaborates with Molag Bal, the malevolent Daedric Prince of Corruption and Domination, in a nefarious plot to seize control of Mundus.
