Two years after the intense events of the original title, Sergeant James Heller returns from his military tour in Iraq, only to learn that his wife and daughter have been declared dead. This heartbreaking revelation reignites his resolve to join the fight against the rampant Blacklight virus in New York Zero (NYZ). Heller is briefed on past outbreaks, including those in Idaho during the ’60s and the catastrophic events of the first game. His quest for vengeance leads him to Mercer, igniting a fierce pursuit.

In a twist of fate, Heller is infected with a strain from Mercer that grants him incredible superhuman powers. After a disorienting blackout, Heller finds himself awakening in a high-security lab run by Gentek scientist Dr. Anton Koenig and Blackwatch Colonel Douglas Rooks, who are conducting experiments on him. He breaks free but soon encounters Mercer, who accuses Gentek and Blackwatch of engineering the Blacklight virus, thus holding them accountable for Heller’s family’s demise. Mercer proposes a fragile alliance to defeat these formidable organizations. Unsure of Mercer’s motives, Heller seeks counsel from his local pastor, Father Luis Guerra.

With Guerra’s invaluable intel, Heller begins hacking into Blackwatch’s Blacknet Terminals, sabotaging several of their operations. As he systematically dismantles Blackwatch, he ultimately confronts Koenig, who claims to be an ally and unveils the super-soldier program known as “Orion.” Heller thwarts Project
