The game kicks off with an engaging prologue set in the summer of 2049 amid a raging snowstorm. Inside a dilapidated, contemporary grocery store, Nier (voiced by Jamieson Price) battles spectral monsters fiercely to protect his ill young daughter, Yonah (portrayed by Heather Hogan). After thwarting the fiends, he rushes to her side, only to find her in the throes of a violent cough. Fast forward 1,312 years, and players are reacquainted with what seems to be the same duo, now residing in a village constructed atop the remnants of an ancient town. This low-tech settlement is surrounded by more advanced ruins, including abandoned train tracks and old industrial equipment. The paths linking these villages are filled with dangers known as Shades, which threaten unsuspecting travelers.
As the terminal illness known as Black Scrawl afflicts Yonah, Nier embarks on a quest to find a cure. Along the way, he discovers a sentient book named Grimoire Weiss (voiced by Liam O’Brien), who proposes a partnership to harness its magical powers in their pursuit of Yonah’s healing. Their journey introduces them to Kainé (voiced by Laura Bailey), a fiery and foul-mouthed warrior, and Emil (portrayed by Julie Ann Taylor), a blindfolded boy whose gaze can petrify anyone. After some adventures, a colossal Shade invades the village, leading to a climactic showdown
