After the destruction of Reach, the last surviving human vessel, The Pillar of Autumn, makes a desperate slip-space jump to evade the Covenant’s relentless pursuit toward Earth. Upon exiting slip-space, the crew discovers a massive, artificial ring-world. Suddenly, a hidden Covenant fleet emerges from a nearby planet, launching an assault on the Autumn. In response, the biologically enhanced super-soldier, John 117—better known as Master Chief—emerges from cryostasis to defend the ship. He battles through swarms of boarding Covenant forces and reaches the bridge, where he retrieves the ship’s AI, Cortana, from Captain Keyes. Together, the duo boards an escape pod and hurtles toward the mysterious surface of the ring-world. Master Chief is the sole survivor of the crash, evading capture and regrouping with other survivors from the Autumn. Determined to rescue Captain Keyes, the Chief mounts an offensive against a Covenant ship and learns from Keyes that this enigmatic world is known as Halo. Cortana quickly realizes its significance and danger.
