Set in a Cold War-era Nevada, a squad of CDC agents explores the notorious nuclear test site known as “Nuketown,” only to be ambushed by zombies. Dr. Edward Richtofen’s sinister plans unfold via a television broadcast as he manipulates the undead from the Moon. With the help of his daughter Samantha and former allies Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki, Dr. Ludvig Maxis strives to thwart Richtofen’s control. Maxis launches three colossal nuclear missiles infused with Element 115—responsible for reanimating dead cells—toward Earth, obliterating Nuketown and everyone there.

Fast forward years later, and Earth has transformed into a desolate wasteland teeming with zombies. In this harsh new reality, four survivors—Samuel J. Stuhlinger, Abigail “Misty” Briarton, Marlton Johnson, and Russman—unite to navigate a zombie-infested Washington, aided by a bus driven by a robotic chauffeur. They receive communications from Maxis, now an advanced A.I., requesting their help against Richtofen. Maxis urges them to energize a tower in a cornfield using a powered zombie, but Richtofen reaches out to Samuel, who hears whispers from the Aether, persuading him to rally his friends to support his bid for dominance.
