Bubsy 3D

Bubsy 3D stands out as the fourth installment in the beloved Bubsy franchise and the only entry to venture into the 3D gaming realm. Released in 1996 for the iconic PlayStation console, this sequel picks up the story on the vibrant home planet of the Woolies, Rayon. With 16 main levels and two challenging boss battles, players are tasked with defeating Rayon’s rulers, the queens Poly and Esther, while collecting rockets and atoms to escape the planet. Despite its adventurous gameplay, the graphics were quite basic, even at its launch, shrouded by a persistent fog that blankets the levels. Bubsy keeps the experience lively by voicing comments triggered by the player’s actions. Unfortunately, planned versions for the Sega 32X and Sega Saturn never saw the light of day. Critical reception for Bubsy 3D was overwhelmingly negative, mainly due to its frustrating control mechanics and awkward camera angles. It earned a notorious spot on Seanbaby’s EGM Crapstravaganza list of the 20 Worst Games of All Time and ranked eighth in GameTrailers’ 2006 Top 10 Best and Worst Games list, where it was harshly labeled as “a terrible, terrible clone.”
