- StarCraft II will be featured in this year’s Esports World Cup.
The ESL Pro Tour for StarCraft II will no longer continue beyond 2025, according to the official announcement by ESL FACEIT Group. The statement outlines that mounting financial difficulties made it increasingly difficult to sustain the scale of the event.
Despite the closure of the tour, StarCraft II will still be part of this year’s Esports World Cup (EWC), a multi-title esports event organized by the EWC Foundation in collaboration with ESL FACEIT Group.
Since its debut in 2020, the ESL Pro Tour featured 78 Masters events and 726 Open Cups with a total of $6,181,300 in prizes. Across five years, the tournament series featured over 48,000 matches for 3344 tournament participants.
However, in 2023, the growing financial strain forced the ESL Pro Tour to scale back, with fewer annual events and reduced prize pools. As the financial struggle continued, “However, we no longer see a sustainable path forward that maintains the quality and scale of competition fans associate with ESL Pro Tour.” stated the press release by ESL FACEIT Group.
