An AI-generated version of a single level from Quake II was unveiled by Microsoft, showcasing the capacities of its Muse AI model. The tech demo is available for everyone to try in the browser via Microsoft Copilot’s web page.
This demo is part of Microsoft’s growing Copilot for Gaming initiative, which leverages AI to help developers prototype and enhance games. The generated Quake II level runs at a resolution of 640 x 360 and a playable frame rate, showing an improvement over previous demonstrations, which were limited to 10fps and a resolution of 300 x 180.
Microsoft notes that Muse is not intended for creating full games or replacing developers as it is only meant to assist in development in such areas as:
- Creating and optimizing modern versions of old games that are not available on the current generation of hardware,
- Prototyping new gameplay mechanics,
- Testing ideas more efficiently,
- Speeding up the overall game development process.
The news is coming ahead of the upcoming release of a new AI-powered assistant called Copilot for Gaming, which is set to launch in April 2025 within the Xbox Insiders program.
