Nintendo introduces game-key cards for the Nintendo Switch 2, a new type of physical game cards. Unlike traditional game cartridges that contain the full game, these new cards act more like a key, unlocking the ability to download the game to your system.
The game key card acts as an access point to download the game from Nintendo’s servers. Once inserted into the Nintendo Switch 2, the card triggers the download process, after which the user can play the game without needing to keep the card in a system.
Obviously, an internet connection is required to download the game, as well as enough free space on the system memory or microSD card.
A similar scheme was previously employed only in professional software like Pro Tools, where the program could only be launched if the correct USB key was inserted.
The game-key card packaging provides all the necessary information for the download process, including the amount of free space required on the Switch 2’s system.
