Ghost of Yōtei got some new details on mechanics, weapons and the protagonists’ background story. The upcoming standalone sequel to the Ghost of Tsushima, developed by Sucker Punch Productions with Sony Interactive Entertainment as publisher is still set to release for PlayStation 5 in 2025 despite wide-ranging industry concerns of launching games the same year with GTA VI.
Set in 1603 at the dawn of the Edo period, Ghost of Yōtei will take players to the snowy island of Hokkaido, home to Mount Yōtei. In the new setting, players will take on the role of Atsu, a character whose life is destroyed after her homestead is burned to the ground. Much like Jin Sakai in the original game, Atsu will embark on a personal quest for retribution.
“Filled with fury and determination, Atsu will hunt down those responsible for the death of her family and exact her revenge. Every odd job and bounty will provide the coin she needs for her journey. But how she fights, survives, and evolves the legend of the Ghost will be up to you.” says the game’s renewed landing page, hinting at a bounty mechanic and the possibility that players will have more agency in how they guide Atsu’s story, determining how they go about tackling the game’s challenges.
The weapons roster is going to include the ōdachi (a large, two-handed sword), the kusarigama (a chain-and-sickle weapon), and dual katanas. Besides that, Ghost of Yōtei promises to feature a dynamic weather system and sprawling environments ranging from windy grasslands to snowy tundras.
Although Ghost of Yōtei is slated for release in 2025, Sony has not confirmed a precise launch date.
The initial title in the series, Ghost of Tsushima, has sold over 13 million copies worldwide as of September 2024, with 2.4 million units sold within its first three days. Sony has also recently revealed that the game will be adapted into an anime series titled Legends. The show is being produced by Aniplex, the studio behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and is set to premiere in 2027.
