Key points
  1. Eidos Montreal has laid off 75 employees as part of a new downsizing wave.
  2. The cuts follow the end of a “project mandate”, possibly tied to Fable co-development.
  3. This brings total layoffs at the studio to 172 since Embracer’s 2024 restructuring.

Eidos Montreal, the studio co-developing the upcoming Fable reboot, is laying off 75 employees. The news was shared in a memo posted to social media, where the studio cited the end of “one of our mandates” as the reason — a vague legalese phrasing likely referring to a completed project or the conclusion of its involvement in a specific contract, possibly Fable.

“This is not a reflection of [our employees’] dedication or skills,” the statement read.
“But unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.” Eidos Montreal added that it’s working to support those affected as they “transition” to new roles.

Embracer Cuts Another 75 Jobs at Deus Ex Studio Eidos Montreal

The Canadian developer is best known for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, its most recent release in 2021. This marks the second round of layoffs at Eidos Montreal in recent months. In 2024, parent company Embracer Group canceled an unannounced Deus Ex project and cut 97 staff.

Embracer acquired Eidos Montreal in 2022, taking ownership of several key franchises, including Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Legacy of Kain. Just last week, Embracer also laid off 17 staff at Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the next Tomb Raider entry.
