Key points
  1. The Sinking City is getting a remaster powered by Unreal Engine 5, featuring improved visuals and 4K textures.
  2. Players who own the original game will be able to upgrade for free.
  3. The Sinking City 2 will be moving away from the original investigation mechanics, focusing on combat, surviving and exploration.

The Sinking City is getting a remaster built on Unreal Engine 5. Game’s developer Frogwares, which is also known for its Sherlock Holmes series, has officially announced that a renewed version of their Lovecraftian detective game is in the works and will be free for the owners of the original title.

The remaster, officially titled The Sinking City Remastered, comes as the studio continues work on the sequel The Sinking City 2, with the crowdfunding campaign for the second part’s development nearing its end.

Released in 2019, The Sinking City originally followed Charles Reed, a private investigator searching for the source of his disturbing visions in the fog-filled city of Oakmont, Massachusetts. The game blends classic detective work with supernatural horror, madness and mystery inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s works.

The remaster will take the game’s original Unreal Engine 4 version and overhaul it with Unreal Engine 5’s power.  Frogwares promises a massive visual upgrade where locations will be fully relit, bringing additional details and objects. There’s also gonna be a new Photo Mode, 4K textures, and improved reflections. For PC players, The Sinking City Remastered will also support DLSS, FSR, and TSR upscaling.

Besides the fact that owners of the original game will be able to upgrade to the new remaster for free, Frogwares is offering a chance treat for those who want to become part of the game’s world. Players can submit voice recordings saying “yes” in any way they like, with 100 randomly chosen entries being transformed into a chanting choir, which will be used in the game and credited accordingly.

While no release date has been set, the remaster will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC once it drops.

Meanwhile, The Sinking City 2 continues to draw in supporters through its successful crowdfunding campaign, which, as of now, has surpassed $464,976, far exceeding its original $108,343 target. The sequel, however, will be a shift in direction. Moving away from the investigation-heavy mechanics of the first game, The Sinking City 2 will focus more on survival horror, with combat and exploration set to take center stage.
