A Reddit thread posted on March 30 revealed that GOG has sent out surveys about the platform offering a subscription service. The survey seems to be the platform’s way to gauge the interest of its users.
The survey that was sent out contained two questions that refer to a subscription plan for the GOG.
- How interested would you be in supporting GOG’s mission beyond purchasing games?
- How interested would you be in supporting GOG’s mission if it were tied to a membership?
Reddit users found these questions unusual coming from GOG as the platform delivers DRM-free games, which means that the players who buy games using the service own the games themselves. “I hope they don’t go through with this, we have enough subscription services in the world as is and I feel like GOG implementing one would go against what it stood for originally,” one Reddit user said.
The same survey was also posted on ResetEra. Needless to say, people over there are also confused as to why GOG would even think of having a subscription service. “Don’t see how a subscription service would really work for GOG as it’s kind of anti what they’re known for,” said Jawmuncher, a moderator of the forum.
GOG is a website that sells DRM-free games. What this means is that each purchase will give the buyer complete ownership of the game. This means they can do whatever they want with the software after purchase, within legal boundaries, of course. It has also been reported that games with DRM tend to cause performance problems.
